Looking for a Christmas Tree in Saratoga NY?

National Lampoon's Christmas VacationEver since my husband and I began dating almost 15 years ago, we’ve kicked off our holiday season by watching National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.  One of our favorite parts is the opening scene where Clarke Griswold (Chevy Chase) and his family are heading out into the wilderness to pick out their perfect family Christmas tree.

We had always wanted a similar experience so when we moved here last year we were excited when we found out there were many places to cut down your own tree.  Our neighbors recommended Bob’s Trees in Galway.

We set out on our tree adventure last Friday and had a great start when our never updated, 5 year old GPS took us down a dirt road for a mile.  Most people would have turned around and stuck to the paved road, but we were thrilled to put a little gravel in our travel and get some mud on the tires.  The kids loved it and now every time we go anywhere they beg to drive on the dirt roads.

Bob’s Trees is about 20 minutes outside of Saratoga Springs and is a family-owned, friendly place that has many choices to fit every family and their budget.  They have pre-cut Christmas trees from $15 up to $100+, table trees, kissing balls, wreaths, and garland.  If you choose to Becca as an "Elf" | Saratoga NYcut your own 12-14’ tree, they are $45, no matter what size.  Our family really enjoyed cutting down our own and were pleasantly surprised by their huge selection.  They let you borrow a saw, which I am sure Chevy Chase would have appreciated.

They have many activities, including many fun photo opportunities with a wooden sleigh and many Christmas cut-outs.  Our kids really enjoyed taking pictures as elves.  You can also go meet Santa and take a horse drawn wagon ride December 3rd, 4th, 10th and 11th.   They also have a mitten hunt for the children and they can even win prizes.Becca and Sam and the Reindeer | Saratoga NY

In addition to enjoying our Christmas tree experience, we also grabbed lunch from their snack bar.  The food was delicious and we appreciated being able to feed our family of 5 for less than $20, cookies included.

We finished up our trip by seeing the 2 live reindeer.   The kids were fascinated that one of them has blue eyes.   We had no problem getting home on regular paved roads.   What great memories!

  1. I’ve lived here all my life but my parents always went to Hewitts until we got a fake tree. Now that I have a family of my own and once my son gets a little older I can’t wait to go pick and cut down our own tree. I’ve heard so many great stories about Bob’s and cutting down the family tree in general. Sounds like your family had a great experience and our family loves the movie “Christmas Vacation” as well, always gives us a great laugh!!!

  2. Hi Patricia- Thanks for the comment! It does make for a nice holiday tradition to cut your own tree. Bob’s or Ellms offers much more of an experience. I hope you enjoy it when you go!
    Happy Holiday!
