Lego Submission Deadline for Saratoga Reads Lego Contest @ Saratoga Springs | New York | United States

The third annual Saratoga Reads Lego Contest, open to all ages, from preschool to adults, will take place on Saturday, Feb. 7, 10–noon at the Division Street Elementary School in Saratoga Springs. The challenge issued by Saratoga Reads is to build an original Lego model inspired by a favorite book. Students may work on their own, or with family and friends in a collaborative project. For contest rules and an entry form, visit SaratogaReads.org.

There is an entry fee of $10, which goes directly to Saratoga Reads to support programs for the community. The entry deadline is January 31.

A new feature to this event this year will be a “Lego Fest” featuring Lego games, animation demos, a raffle for a Lego Mindstorm robot, a book signing with Minecraft series author Mark Cheverton, refreshments, and more.

Contest participants will display their pre-built models at Lego Fest. Prizes will be awarded at each grade level and a special “best of show” award will be determined by public vote.

Lil Laxers Youth Lacrosse Classes

Lil Laxers is our toddler/youth lacrosse program.  The class is open to children ages 3.5- 8 years old.  The class will introduce the basics of the game in a fun, rewarding, non-contact environment.  Children will learn cradling, throwing, catching, dodging and shooting.  Our program runs year round, with open enrollment in every session.  Each session runs 8 weeks long.

Kicks for Kids Toddler Soccer Classes

Kicks for Kids is our toddler soccer program.  Our curriculum is tailored to each age group, 2-5 years old.  Building motor skills, listening skills, teamwork and individual skills.  Sessions are 8 weeks long, meeting once a week for 45-50 minutes.  Classes run on weekday and weekends (full class schedule posted online).

Eagle Watch @ Moreau Lake State Park

Grab a pair of binoculars and join park staff on their weekly Bald Eagle survey. Moreau Lake State Park’s section of the Hudson is home to wintering bald eagles. It is important for us to monitor their population and health, please come and help us!

Registration is necessary with 24 hours advanced noticed, please call 793-0511.

Programs are weather permitting and are subject to change. Please call the park office to confirm event date, time and location. Participants should be prepared to spend time outside and are encouraged to wear adequate clothing and footwear. There is a program fee of $2 for adults and children and $1 for seniors. If there are no participants signed up with 24 hours advanced notice of the program, classes can be cancelled at the discretion of the park.

Here’s how it works:  Pick up a ballot form at any participating establishment, taste different soups and chowders for a $1 a cup (3 oz. serving) and vote for your favorite!  Valid ballots need 5 stickers from participating businesses and can be turned in to the Saratoga Springs Visitor Center (11-4 p.m), the Saratoga Springs City Center (11-4 p.m) or the Saratoga Downtowner Motel (from 2-4 p.m). With a completed ballot, for an additional $10, Chowderfest attendees can then take home an official long-sleeve Chowderfest T-shirt (2XL shirts are $12).  Winners will be announced inside the Saratoga Springs City Center at 6:30 p.m.!

What about the kids?

Chowderfest is very family friendly, however the streets and sidewalks are busy and often there are lines at the chowder stops.  Be patient, dress warm, and have a few warm-up spots in your loop such as the library, the City Center, Saratoga Springs Visitors Center, Northshire Bookstore or the Saratoga Marketplace near Silverado on Broadway.

Maple Avenue Middle School Musical Club Presents Mary Poppins @ Maple Ave Middle School

The Maple Avenue Middle School Musical Club will be performing Mary Poppins in the Maple Avenue Middle School Trombley Auditorium. Over 100 Middle School students and volunteers started work on Mary Poppins last November and have been busy preparing for opening night, Friday, Jan. 30 at 7:00 pm, with daily rehearsals after school and on weekends. The show will also be performed at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31; 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, and 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7.
 
In this Mary Poppins production, based on the Broadway musical, the jack-of-all trades, Bert, introduces us to England in 1910 and the troubled Banks family. Young Jane and Michael have sent many a nanny packing before Mary Poppins arrives on their doorstep. Using a combination of magic and common sense, she must teach the family how to value each other again. Mary Poppins takes the children on many magical and memorable adventures, but Jane and Michael aren’t the only ones she has a profound effect upon. Even grown-ups can learn a lesson or two from the nanny who advises that “Anything can happen if you let it.” 
 
Kids and adults alike will enjoy the memorable tunes, dance numbers and colorful cast of this delightful family themed favorite!

Bonjour, ladies!  In this class, we‘ll pay homage to the incomparable Julia Child, one of Chef Shannon’s all-time favorite chefs and cooking personalities.  We will, of course, begin the evening in Divine Wines and sip some beautiful French wines.  Then we’ll head to the Learning Center to have some fun, Julia-style!  We’ll be making three classic dishes and “master the art of French cooking” by creating a classic rolled omelet, Boeuf Bourguignon, and end the evening with cream puffs!  We’ll embrace Julia’s spirit and heed her wise words, “This is my invariable advice to people: Learn how to cook- try new recipes, learn from your mistakes, be fearless, and above all have fun!”  You bet we will.

Saratoga Reads Junior Book Discussion Part 1 @ Saratoga Springs Public Library

The youth programs will begin on Thursday, Feb. 5, with a junior book discussion, Part 1, 6:30-8 p.m. at the Saratoga Springs Public Library, H. Dutcher Community Room. Students in grades 4-6 are invited to join students from Saratoga Springs High School and Skidmore College in a discussion of The Heart of a Chief by local author and educator Joseph Bruchac. In this story an 11-year-old Penacook Indian boy living on a reservation faces his father’s absence, a controversy surrounding plans for a casino on a tribal island, and insensitivity toward Native Americans in his school and nearby town. As he confronts these issues, he finds himself taking his first steps toward leadership.

A second discussion for The Heart of a Chief will be offered on Thursday, Feb. 12, as part of a meet-the-author night with Bruchac. Participants are urged to attend both sessions.

Registration for the events is required. Students may register by emailing their name, grade, and school to [email protected] Registered students will be given a copy of the book to read and keep.

Winter Break Program for Kids @ Tang Teaching Museum

On Wednesday, Feb. 18, 10-11:30 a.m., Saratoga Reads will team up with the Tang Teaching Museum at Skidmore College to offer a workshop for budding artists age six and up with an accompanying adult.

The program will begin with a discussion of one the Saratoga Reads junior books, Jingle Dancer by Cynthia Leitich Smith (illustrated by Cornelius Van Wright and Ying-Hwa Hu). The book tells a story about a young member of the Muscogee Nation who borrows jingles from the dresses of several friends and relatives so that she can perform at the powwow. The book includes notes about the jingle dance tradition and its regalia. Participants are urged to read the book in advance.

Following the discussion, the young artists will work on an art project related to the story. The group is then invited to have lunch in Skidmore’s Murray-Aikins Dining Hall. The cost of the meal is $9.63 for adults and $7.49 for children (ages 6-12).

This program is offered on the third Thursday of every month at 7:00 p.m. and includes a guided tour of the Labor and Delivery Unit and general information about your options for birth at Saratoga Hospital.

Couples taking a childbirth class (either the all-day Saturday Childbirth Class, or the four-day Childbirth Preparation class) need not attend, as a tour is included.

We welcome participants who are considering where to give birth, as well as those who are giving birth at Saratoga Hospital for the first time. This class is free and open to the public.

Tuesday for Tots is a neat drop-in program at the Children’s Museum at Saratoga.  Tuesday for Tots is every Tuesday from 10 a.m. -12 p.m. and 1 p.m – 3 p.m and is free with museum admission.

This is a special time for younger visitors to gain preschool readiness skills in a fun and social environment.   Drop in anytime for playdough, crafts, games and friends!
