Kids After School Kitchen: Curried Squash Soup @ Healthy Living Market and Cafe

Fall-friendly soup is on the menu for this great after school class! In this class, Chef Shannon will introduce your child to the wild world of winter squashes. From Delicata to Hubburd and Kabocha to Butternut, these beauties come in all different shapes and sizes. Kids will make use of all those delightfully different squashes, chopping and stirring their way to creating a wonderfully warming curried squash soup and topping it with cinnamon-y croutons.

This Halloween the Riggi Family, in conjunction with Homes for Orphaned Pets Exist (H.O.P.E) is hosting a family friendly Halloween bash starting at 3:30 pm until 9:30pm and is inviting the town to spend this spooky night with them and their 41 furry friends!
Michele will be dressed as Cinderella, complete with a glittering full-size carriage, live ponies and attending footmen from which she will distribute hugs and chocolate bars to any trick-or-treater who greets her. Guests should look out for the special bars containing $100 bills that will be given out once every half an hour.
In addition to the chocolate treats, there will also be free 140 gallons of hot cider, 2,400 hot cider doughnuts from “Fo Castle Farms”, and a guess-the-weight-pumpkin competition where you could win a one-year family membership to the Saratoga Regional YMCA.

The Festival is a community event free and open to the public. Hosted by The Albany Academies, it will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00pm at 140 Academy Road in Albany.
The Albany Children’s Book Festival is one of the premier literary events in the Capital Region. Its mission is to nurture literacy in school-aged children and its vision is to help provide children, in every community, access to books to explore, learn from, and to stimulate their imaginations.
There will be over 50 published authors and illustrators showcasing their work along with book signings, book sales from independently-owned Northshire Books, interactive activities for kids, exhibitors, and workshops for teachers, librarians and adults. Refreshments will be offered. This is the perfect way to start your holiday shopping!

After discussing Taylor Davis’s sculpture Da, can ye no tell and André Cadere’s sculpture Untitled in I was a double, we will make sculptures using tubes as our base, then adding colors and textures.

Most activities run from 2 to 3:30 pm and include a brief tour of a museum exhibition followed by a hands-on art-making activity. The programs are suitable for children age 5 and older and their adult companions, and all materials will be provided. Details on each week’s program are below. Kick off the Science Festival of the Capital Region withan exploration of the history of sound recording (6-8pm): 1878 Edison Tinfoil Recording with miSci Archivist Chris Hunter; Pallophotophone Demonstrations with Mechanical Engineer Russ DeMuth; and Edison Wax Cylinder Acoustic Recording & Playback Demonstration on Original Equipment with Wax Cylinder Specialist Peter Dilg and SCCC’s Dean of the School of Music William Meckley.
Conclude the evening with a special screening of WMHT’s Steinmetz Documentary (8-9pm): WMHT’s documentary, Divine Discontent: Charles Proteus Steinmetz, traces the life of “The Wizard of Schenectady” and how Steinmetz’s contributions live today within every electrical pulse and circuit. Dr. Ronald Kline of Cornell University headlines a group of historians and engineers who bring him back to life. Together with the help of the Schenectady Historical Society, and miSci, home of General Electric’s archives, they combine to tell a compelling story of innovation and triumph in America’s Golden Age of Invention.

Astrophysicist Dr. Heidi Newberg, RPI, presents On Winning the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics for the Discovery of Dark Energy. The 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded “for the discovery of the accelerating expansion of the Universe through observations of distant supernovae” with one half to Saul Perlmutter & his team The Supernova Cosmology Project and the other half jointly to Brian P. Schmidt and Adam G. Riess. Astrophysicist and President of the Dudley Observatory, Heidi Newberg was a founding member of The Supernova Cosmology Project, one of the competing teams to be awarded the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics. She will describe what Dark Energy is, how it was discovered, what it is like to work on ground-breaking scientific research with The Supernova Cosmology Project and her reflections from the award ceremony itself. A Star Party (rain or shine) will follow the lecture. We’ll look at the night sky outside through telescopes or inside the Suits-Bueche Planetarium if rainy.
