What is the Flurry Festival?
The Flurry Festival is less than a week away in Saratoga Springs and once again, this year’s lineup is jam-packed with fun. The Flurry serves as a showcase for the wealth of talented dance leaders and musicians from our area.
Combining traditional social dance and live music, The Flurry is a feel-good festival that livens up the Saratoga Hilton and the Saratoga City Center and other venues in Saratoga Springs for three days; February 15th-17th 2013.
I spoke with Tamara Flanders, administrative director of this year’s Flurry Festival and got the scoop about this event that promises a little something for everyone.
“This year we have revamped the lineup to include more programming for kids and teens, including a kids jam session which is brand new for this year,” Tamara said.
Also new this year, the Flurry Festival offers two dances for ages 21 and under only, a Swing Dance and Contra Dance. Also new is a rave-style Techno Contra Dance for night owls, Friday night from 12:30 a.m.-2:30 a.m. The children’s jam session will by on Sunday at 10 a.m. and open to kids ages 1-5. Some instruments will be available for use or you can bring your own!

The Flurry Festival is truly one of the best family events all year in Saratoga NY.
Families and children will enjoy a wide range of activities and adventures with old time community dances, family dances, multicultural dances for families, square dancing, sing-along’s, puppet shows, storytelling, and lots more!
We’ve brought the kids the past few years to this festival and they love it! The kids really enjoy singing, dancing, hearing a storyteller, playing and learning. We attended several fun events last year like an African drumming workshop, kids concerts, family dances, and a couple storytellers.

To say it is a bit overwhelming for a first time attendee is a bit of an understatement. “Look at the schedule in advance and create your plan of attack,” Flanders advises. The organizers work very hard to keep kids activities back to back and often in the same room.
“Dress in layers because you will get hot, bring snacks and water; preferably labeled with your name,” Flanders advises.

Full festival tickets, including Friday-Sunday are $95 for adults, teen tickets are $65, kids 5 and under are free, 5-13 and up are just $3 for the weekend or $1 a day. Additional ticket information can be found on The Flurry Festival website.
