Poor Backpack Use Leading to Chronic Back Pain

In 2001, more than 7,000 people were sent to the emergency room for backpack-related injuries as reported by the Consumer Product Safety Commission! Additionally, a disturbing trend is emerging among young children today suffering from back pain much earlier than previous generations.
The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) posted a recent study published in Italy regarding backpack use and found equivalents among the adult population. The study revealed an average child carries a weight comparable to a 39-lb weight for a 176-lb man or a 29-lb weight for a 132-lb woman. The study also concluded, of the children carrying the proportional weight, 60% of them experienced back pain.
In fact, the issue has become so widespread, the California State Assembly passed legislation that would force schools to develop ways to reduce the weight in students’ backpacks. New Jersey is another state seeking similar legislation.
The ACA recommends these tips when considering backpack use:
The backpack should never hang more than four inches below the waistline.- Be sure the child’s backpack weighs no more than 5 to 10 percent of his or her own body weight.
- Urge your child to use BOTH straps and wide padded straps are recommended.
- Backpacks with individual compartments can help position contents most effectively, but be sure pointed objects are not resting on your child’s back.
When your child experiences back pain or discomfort, be sure to call your doctor of chiropractic or trusted healthcare professional. They are licensed and trained to diagnose and treat patients of all ages and some will use gentler and more specific types of treatment for children.
***If you are concerned about your child’s backpack use, I will be hosting a “Backpack Check” during the week of September 24-28th at our office in Saratoga Springs. The event will be FREE to students of all ages and walk-ins are welcome. I hope to see you there!***
