Ellsworth Commons in Malta NY

To those of us living in Malta, NY, the Ellsworth Commons construction project is a monster we have been watching take shape now for well over a year.  New neighbor and micro-chip giant GLOBALFOUNDRIES is obviously the driving force behind much of the development in Malta and will continue to be the impetus of growth here.

Ellsworth Commons | Malta NY | Saratoga NYTo many Malta residents, Ellsworth Commons is truly a monster; a terrifyingly large, out of place beast that doesn’t belong.  To others, myself included, we are eagerly anticipating the arrival of restaurants, shops, boutiques, and a coffee shop that is long overdue.

Ellsworth Commons is situated on a large plot of land on Route 9, just north of the Shops of Malta (Price Chopper plaza).  It is across the street from Malta Town Hall, and on the same land mass as the new CVS. (see map at end of this post)  It’s a mixed-use development in the New Urbanist style.  What does that mean?  I spoke with John Zepko, Senior Planner with the Town of Malta and got the scoop.

“The idea behind New Urbanism is to build a walkable community that is less auto-dependent, uses space more efficiently and offers goods and services close by where you live,” Zepko said.

Ellsworth Commons | Malta NY | Saratoga NYAs of this post, there have been no official tenants announced, although residents have begun inhabiting some of the 312 luxury apartments.

In addition to the luxury rentals, Ellsworth Commons boasts 70,000 sq ft of retail and office space spread between four structures, and 22 brownstone-style townhouses.

Between Ellsworth Commons and CVS is another property owned by the same developers as Ellsworth Commons.  While Ellsworth Commons | Malta NY | Saratoga NYno tenant has been announced for that space yet, it is approved for a bank or restaurant.  My vote would be restaurant for sure.

Access to Ellsworth Commons from the opposite side of Route 9 (where Malta Community Center is) right now is limited to one crosswalk all the way down at the new CVS on Route 9 and Kendall Way.  Zepko assured my that they are working on a plan to manage the traffic and are looking to create medians, crosswalks and possibly a boulevard.

Unfortunately, Sandra, the property manager of Ellsworth Commons did not return any of my phone calls and is hopefully too busy filling Ellsworth with amazing tenants.  Fingers crossed.

Ellsworth Commons | Malta NY | Saratoga NYEllsworth Commons in Malta is a massive project with the power to change things and perhaps turn Malta into a destination, not simply a pass-through en route to Saratoga Springs to the North or Clifton Park to the South.

I will continue to bring more updates on this project and others in Malta and the rest of Saratoga County that have an impact on local families.

What are your thoughts on Ellsworth Commons in Malta, NY?  Love it?  Hate it?  Excited?

Tell us what you think!

  1. Great article! Although I think the architecture of the complex could have been much more fun and design-forward, it is a great thing – the walkable, less auto-dependent community is a great idea and the shops, restaurants, boutiques and coffee shops will be a fantastic addition to an already amazing neighborhood. Can’t wait to visit the complex myself!

    • I agree Veronika that it is not very “forward” in terms of architecture or design. They can make up for it by filling the space with awesome tenants that we will all love to visit. Thanks for the comment!

  2. A good article, but I disagree about Malta just being a drive through on the way to town .. we have one of few drive in movies left, there aren’t alot of those and there are people that travel just to see them , plus we have the Speedway which again is one of a few left in this area .. plus Double M western store and the haunted hayrides and rodeos in the summer .. lets not forget what good things we have on our way to the future which we really dont have any idea what will go in those store fronts.. its could be something great and I hope it will be .. or it could be one of many same chains.

    • Thanks for your comment Sandi. I for one am a huge Malta supporter! In fact, my first website, and springboard to SaratogaMama was http://www.MaltaMama.com. We have the best parks/playgrounds, a nice community center, library, and amazing families that live here. To the outsider though, it is viewed as a “pass-through”. I’m hopeful that this project and more will put Malta on the map!

    • To my knowledge, the projects that are currently in the works here were approved before GF announced plans for phase 2. I’m hoping everything continues as-is! Thanks for the comment Shane.

  3. Great article! I drive by often and wondered what was going on with it. Now I know. I do have a concern about crossing Route 9 in crosswalks. Right now it is not easy to cross at the round about at Rt 67 and 9. Very few cars stop including the police when I try to cross with my two grand children in a stroller. Some truckers will stop and sometime even block the other lane so we can cross safely. I have sent my concerns to the town and it seem they know of the problem but have not figured out that a sign that states “stop for pedestrian crossing” like is at Clifton Park Center Mall is a cheap solution. It seems like an easy fix since the law does already state cars must stop. I hope it won’t take someone getting hit to make it a priority.

  4. I am a residsent of Ellsworth Commons. I was one of the first tenants to move in. I absolutely love my apartment. The maintenance team are wonderful. I had a work order done and the next day the mantenance supervisor asked me as a follow up it everything was working properly. The rental folks are very friendly and helpful. I would recommend anyone looking for an apartment to move there. As far as the commerical business I am looking forward to having restaurants and other services moving to the new location. People have to realize that Rome wasn’t built in a day. It takes time and a lot of legal procedures to get leases signed. Pat

    • Hi Pat, thanks for your comment! I’m very happy to hear that you are having such a positive experience in Ellsworth. That’s wonderful. I’m looking forward to some new restaurants and services too and will continue to wait… as patiently as possible!
